Dr. Nadeesha Lewke Bandara

I am a Research, Development, and Propagation Specialist with a strong foundation in plant breeding, biotechnology, and woody‑plant propagation. Holding a PhD in Agricultural Sciences and Biotechnology from the University of Udine- Italy, I focus on connecting scientific innovation with practical horticultural production to develop resilient, high‑value ornamental plant varieties.

My experience spans both academia and industry. During my Knowledge Transfer Partnership at the University of Nottingham, I developed propagation protocols for hard‑to‑propagate tree species, strengthening the link between research outcomes and commercial nursery application. I later moved into the horticultural sector, and I now work with Pinnacle Plants International and Valin Genetics, where I contribute to new plant development, variety trials, propagation optimisation, and the scaling of elite selections for market release.

I am passionate about breeding high‑value ornamental plants, including varieties with improved abiotic and biotic stress resistance. I also enjoy exploring novel and underutilised species and studying the environmental benefits and ecosystem services provided by horticultural plants. My work blends rigorous scientific methodology with hands‑on horticultural skill, enabling me to support nurseries, growers, and breeders in transforming innovative plant ideas into successful commercial products.

Driven by curiosity, precision, and a commitment to sustainability, I aim to advance environmentally resilient and future‑focused practices within the global green industry. I value collaboration and enjoy working with professionals across horticulture, plant science, and breeding to push the boundaries of modern plant development.
